Project Location - Why Haldia Industrial Park, West Bengal?
The proposed EICL container manufacturing and logistics project is strategically located at Haldia Industrial Park, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, within the established Haldia port-industrial cluster. The location offers a distinctive combination of port, rail, road, industrial and logistics infrastructure.
Haldia Dock Complex of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority is located in close proximity to the proposed project and handled approximately 49.54 million tonnes of cargo during FY 2023–24. The port has multiple berths, jetties and supporting infrastructure and provides an important maritime gateway for eastern India.
Haldia is connected to the national highway network through NH-116, which links Haldia with NH-16 at Kolaghat. NH-116 provides an important road connection for movement of raw materials, machinery and finished containers, while State Highway connectivity provides an alternative road route through the Mecheda/Tamluk area.
The area is also connected to the South Eastern Railway network through the Haldia branch and Panskura/Mecheda. The Mecheda–Haldia Dock Complex rail route has been converted to double line, providing an important basis for future freight movement.
Haldia has an established industrial ecosystem comprising steel, metal, engineering, fabrication, power, petrochemical and logistics enterprises. This ecosystem provides EICL with opportunities for vendor development, sourcing, industrial services, skilled manpower and ancillary support.
The combination of port proximity, multimodal transport connectivity, established industrial infrastructure, access to steel and engineering ecosystems, and proximity to Kolkata and the eastern Indian market makes Haldia particularly suitable for EICL's proposed integrated container manufacturing and logistics facility.
The location is therefore expected to support efficient inbound movement of steel and other inputs, economical movement of finished containers to domestic and export markets, development of ancillary industries, and future expansion of EICL's manufacturing and logistics operations.
